Alcohol addiction in higher educated women a 'hidden problem'

The causes of this are the increasing tensions that are partly caused by stress, relationship problems and a high workload. As a result, women seek relaxation in alcohol. Where men often drink to socialize in public, this drinking bout often takes place secretly indoors. So the shame makes this a hidden problem. It is also striking that these women more often go to the doctor for medicines for alcohol-related problems such as sleep and stress complaints, without mentioning drinking.

The Negative Effects of Alcohol Addiction in Women

Women are more sensitive to the negative effects of alcohol than men. The female body breaks down the alcohol less because fewer enzymes are produced. The liver is affected more quickly and they are more likely to suffer from alcoholic hepatitis and liver cirrhosis than men. The typical female effects of alcohol also include disrupted menstruation and promotion of breast cancer.
